Gary LeCleir, PhD
Senior Lecturer, REU Director
Dr. Gary LeCleir’s research focuses on understanding the complex interactions that occur between microbes and the environment. He employs advanced techniques in molecular biology and bioinformatics to investigate the diversity, community structure, and metabolic processes of microbes. A key focus of Dr. LeCleir’s research is microbial community interactions within aquatic ecosystems, where he examines how microorganisms contribute to nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and ecosystem health.
Dr. LeCleir has been with the University since 2006 and is transitioning into a new role as a senior lecturer this Fall. He is passionate about undergraduate education and enjoys introducing students to the importance of microbes and their contributions to the functioning of our planet, human health and society. Dr. LeCleir also engages undergraduates in the research mission. He considers research experience to be a key component of a student’s academic education and crucial to their development as a scientist. He has served as the director of a National Science Foundation supported Research Experience for Undergraduates site (REU) at UTK for over a decade. The REU program brings in a diverse array of students from across the country to work in UTK faculty research labs focusing on microbial community interactions and functions. He also serves as the faculty representative for the UTK Microbiology Undergraduate Club. In this capacity, he helps the club’s student leadership organize professional development opportunities, social events and outreach activities.
